Description
Starting from the Port of Peiraeus, we travel by boat to the island of Aegina. It is a Greek destination close to Athens, with the duration of the trip by boat being about 1 hour.
Arriving at the port of Aegina, our first tour begins at the Temple of Aphaia, a historic temple dating back to around 490 BC. which is preserved to this day. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Athena (Aphaia). Legend says that in the cave that Vritomartis was hiding when she arrived in Aegina, figurines of a pre-Hellenic female deity, Eugonia, were found. Later this deity was identified as the goddess Athena and thus the name “Afaia Athena” arose, by which the temple was named.
During our tour of the temple, we learn about its architecture and history through the narrations of our guide. The Temple of Aphaia Athena is an excellent demonstration of the Doric style and the most important attraction of the island.
Continuing our tour of the island, we head to the town for a walk and food. The streets of the island are picturesque and full of traditional small tourist shops as well as shops with local products. Aegina is famous for its pistachios, which have flourished spectacularly on the island since the 19th century and are well worth stocking up on. Whilst enjoying the food in one of the many seaside taverns of the island, we taste the unique traditional and modern Greek flavors.
Our one-day excursion concludes with our return to the port of Piraeus in the evening.
