Description
Our journey starts from the port of Katakolo, which will take us to Ancient Olympia, a monument of ancient Greek tradition and history located in the prefecture of Ilia in the Peloponnese. The place itself is supreme for the Greek and international world since it was the birthplace of the first Olympic Games held every four years in honor of the god Zeus based on Greek mythology.
Arriving in Ancient Olympia, we see a number of sacred and archaeological monuments such as the Temple of Zeus – a demonstration of the Doric style, the Temple of Hera, the Parliament, the Rectory, the Stadium where officials and athletes entered, and other monuments. Our guide takes us back to the history of the place and tells us about all the habits of the ancient Greeks, as well as the dedications they made to the gods of mythology. The golden-ivory statue of Zeus dominates the space, as it is an example of a gift in honor of the god worshiped by the Ancient Greeks and a work of incomparable beauty and detail.
Our next tour is the museum of Ancient Olympia, which is one of the most important museums in Greece. There we find twelve rooms with a permanent exhibition of finds such as figurines, weapons, ancient objects and pottery objects. The museum hosts in its halls the finds connected to the Sanctuary of Olympia, one of the largest and most important religious and cult centers of the ancient times.
After our tour of the historical sites we make a stop for food at a traditional Greek tavern where we have the opportunity to taste the Mediterranean Greek flavors and discuss what impressed us. Next stop is the olive press or the apiary, where we learn about the production and preparation of traditional Greek products. Finally, we make our way back to the port, rounding off nicely our day.
