Description
We start our journey from the port of Katakolo with our destination being Ancient Olympia in the prefecture of Ilia, a place of utmost importance as it was the venue of the first Olympic Games held every four years as part of the Olympiad in honor of the god Zeus. Arriving at our destination we can see the admirable archaeological excavations and learn their history, some of which are: the Temple of Zeus – a demonstration of the Doric style, the Temple of Hera, the Parliament, the Rectory, the Stadium where officials and athletes entered, and other monuments.
Our tour of the historical site of Ancient Olympia never ceases to impress us, as the entire archaeological site highlights the greatness of Greek culture.
Our next stop is the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, a museum with a great long history. There we find twelve rooms with a permanent exhibition of finds such as figurines, weapons, the statue of Nike of Paeonios and of course, the statue of Hermes of Praxiteles which has unimaginable beauty. The museum hosts in its halls the finds connected to the Sanctuary of Olympia, one of the largest and most important religious and cult centers of the ancient times.
After completing our tour and enjoying our food in a traditional Greek tavern in the area, we take the road back to the port.
