Description
Our one-day excursion to Delphi starts in Athens, where we board a coach. The route to the historical and archaeological site we are heading to is easy and relatively short, since the distance from the center of Athens is only 2.5 hours. Delphi, according to Greek mythology, is the navel of the earth, i.e. the point where the two eagles sent by Zeus to find the center of the world met and functioned as an oracle. In modern times, the place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an attraction for many visitors to Greece.
Through our guided tour of the archaeological site, we have the opportunity to learn about the importance of this place in ancient times, but also to get to know all the sanctuaries and domes that we find at the site. In addition to the archaeological site, our tour also takes place in the Delphi museum, one of the most important in Greece. The museum is housed in a two-story building and exhibits rich collections of architectural sculptures and statues, dedications of the faithful to the sanctuary. The guide gives us information about ancient Greek art through the examples of works that we see and which date from the 2nd millennium before Christ.
The last part of our one-day excursion is our visit to a traditional Greek restaurant where we can enjoy Greek flavors while having the view of the largest Greek olive grove, the Amfissa olive grove, which belongs to the Delphic landscape. It is estimated that it consists of more than 1,200,000 olive trees, some of which exceed five meters in height, while their age is lost in the depths of the centuries. Our excursion ends with our return to Athens in the evening.
