Description
Our starting point is Athens from where our journey begins as we board the vehicle towards Meteora. It is located at the northwestern tip of Thessaly, and its characteristic feature is the dark sandstone rocks that make up an impressive landscape.
The wild and inaccessible landscape of Meteora was fertile ground for the Christian ascetics who settled in the area and created monasteries. Of the thirty that once existed, only six are now in operation, which are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. During our tour of this masterpiece of nature, we have the opportunity to tour the entire geological monument learning its history, as well as take many photos. The sight we see is unique and breathtaking.
Some of the monasteries we visit are the Monastery of Megalo Meteoro (the largest monastery), the Monastery of Varlaam (the second largest monastery), the Monastery of Rousanos, the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapausas, the Monastery of Agios Stefanos and the Monastery Holy Trinity. In the monasteries that we have the opportunity to visit, the tour guide informs us about their history and their current function. The impressive element of these locations is that they are located on the tops of rocks, and the view from these points is of unparalleled beauty.
Then we make a stop for food in a traditional Greek tavern of Kalambaka where we try Greek dishes. Finally, on the way back, we stop at the monument of Thermopylae, the place where one of the most important battles in Greek history took place, led by Leonidas and the 300 Spartans against the Persians. After a sensational travel experience we are returning to Athens again.
