Description
Our tour of the island includes visiting some of its most famous places, such as the traditional settlement of Oia. Oia is one of the most photographed places in the world, as the sunset scenery from all sides is breathtaking. During the Frankish period, Oia was one of the five castle states of Santorini and a place for sailors and captains.
The traditional Cycladic churches dominate the island, while its special architecture due to the volcanic slope makes it a unique destination worldwide. In Oia, we have the opportunity to tour the beautiful, ornate monasteries and admire the wonderful view.
The next stop on the most popular village of Santorini is Megalochori, a place-labyrinth of winding streets. The characteristic feature of the traditional houses in Santorini, as in all the other Cycladic islands, are the whitewashed houses with blue doors and blue windows. In Megalochori, we can learn about the history of the monasteries of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia Tis Plakas, as the whole island has a strong religious element.
Our tour of the island concludes with our visit to the Archaeological site of Akrotiri, one of the most important prehistoric settlements in the Aegean. In this archeological place, we have the possibility to mentally travel back in time, facing many scattered buildings and objects trapped under a thick layer of volcanic material. Our travel experience comes to an end, enjoying the idyllic scenery and taking lots of pictures.
